EMERGENCY PROTEST AGAINST ISDS IN CETA OUTSIDE BIS

The Department of Business Innovation and Skills Offices in London 12th September

Today the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement was discussed in Brussels by the European Union Trade Policy Committee. This coming week is the last chance for the Investor State Dispute Settlement provision to be removed from the text.

The EU Commission is likely to completely ignore the 150 000 negative responses in the public consultation on ISDS.  The number of responses was so unexpected that it crashed their website. Political groups and even governments have made their opposition to ISDS in CETA clear.

Occupy London called an emergency demo. We invited the Business and Innovations and Services to join but they declined. Below are some images from the day. Romayne Pheonix from the Green Party spoke as did Nick Dearden from World Development Movement and Jeremy Corbyn from the Labour Party all spoke.

The corporate takeover may have already happened but TTIP will create a parallel legal system that will lie outside both national and international law. This parallel legal system, enabled through the ISDS provision, will not observe two basic principles of law : Equitable access to justice, and independent judges.

CETA is closely linked in agenda to TTIP but ironically is not as comprehensive. CETA is often simplistically described as the Canadian TTIP. Part of this agenda is the opening of new markets to privatization. The UK government has not exempted any public services from being in TTIP, not even the cherished National Health Service.
