#OccupyLSX Callout – Be ready to create a better world!

Occupy London Stock Exchange calls supporters to meet 12 noon at St Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday, 15 October

Occupy London Stock Exchange (OccupyLSX) has called on people to meet at 12pm 15th October in front of St Paul’s Cathedral in London for the beginning of a planned peaceful occupation in London’s Square Mile. Occupy LSX intend to highlight and address social and economic injustice in the UK and beyond, as part of a global movement for real democracy.

Supported by UK Uncut, the London-based Assembly of the Spanish 15M movement and others, the movement has received phenomenal interest, from the public and media in the UK and around the world. The OccupyLSX facebook group now has more than 13,000 members, with more than 5,000 confirming their intention to be there on the day.

OccupyLSX issued the following call out to potential attendees:

“The words ‘corporate greed’ ring through the speeches and banners of protests across the globe. After huge bail-outs and in the face of unemployment, privatisation and austerity, we still see profits for the rich on the increase. But we are the 99%, and on October 15th our voice unites across gender and race, across borders and continents, as we call for equality and justice for all.

“In London, we will occupy the Stock Exchange. Reclaiming space in the face of the financial system and using it to voice ideas for how we can work towards a better future. A future free from austerity, growing inequality, unemployment, tax injustice and a political elite who ignores its citizens, and work towards concrete demands to be met.”

When and where? Assemble Midday in front of St Pauls Cathedral (London EC4M 8AD). Please try to be on time and not early or late. When you are there be ready and attentive. Nearest tubes are St. Pauls, Mansion House and Canon Street; buses 4, 11, 15, 23, 25, 26, 100, 242; more information at www.stpauls.co.uk/Visits-Events/Getting… and check Transport For London website for delays and closures at journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk
What to bring? If planning to stay for a while, do bring plenty of food and water, wrap up warm. Tents , sleeping bags and torches are also a good idea

  1. This is just stupid.

Why are you protesting outside the London Stock Exchange, you do realise that bankers do not work at or for the London Stock Exchange and that it has nothing to do with the financial crisis, literally nothing.

More worryingly, a lot of the posts on this website seem to suggest that a new political system is required. Fortunately we live in a liberal democracy where you get to choose your government every five years, this is a good thing, if the government loses the support of the general population they can be removed at a general election or through a vote of no confidence. Think you can do a better job than the current government? Then convince the population that you can and you will be in charge. Shouting for regime change outside the building of a company which has little to do with the issue you are protesting about makes you look like an anarchist (in the literal rather than philosophical sense) who has missed the point, hardly inspiring is it?

  2. Guys – I think James might be right. It does seem somewhat foolish to protest against an office building which houses a company which makes trading platforms and where there are no traders (even during the week). Also, have you ever been to the City on a Saturday? It is dead. No-one in sight. The point of protesting is to be heard, presumably? I suggest we move to Mothercare, WH Smiths or some other company with little to do with the financial crisis. I will be holding a one man protest outside a random house in Norbiton if anyone is interested in joining. They probably have a mortgage so are as culpable as the next man.

  3. I don’t think the location is that important, we are protesting against capitalism, so we need to start it at a symbol of capitalism, this isn’t the stock exchange, the symbol we are attacking is the City of London, the financial entity. I agree, having a general election is a very good thing that needs protecting, but we can still demand more democracy and participation than this. we might be more democratic than many other places in the world, but there is still a big big gap to fill and many improvments to be made. not least the fact that very few of us ever felt represented by the elected government, even those who voted for it. also the amount of power unelected organisations hold over our lives is something to be challeneged. we don’t want to over throw democracy, we want to make it more democratic.

    • Agree wholeheartedly that the venue isn’t so important as the fact that people are standing up and being counted. Good on you and I’ll be joining you soon. The fact that the vicar has stood up to the police is crucial and ultra respect to him. Keep it non violent as the police will do everything they can to provoke you us and unfortunately it’s the only language they understand..

  4. We live in a country where the electorate voted against having a more sophisticated voice (AV).
But I see the need for mass action. What concerns me more as a father of a six months old baby is, that this article doesn’t mention anything about the non-violent nature of the event..

  5. Oh dear James, if you actually read the web site you will note that it’s a platform to use our voice, a focal point. There is a chance also that comments here are from off duty police doing their bit to undermine the protests. I’m not a young anarchist, I’m an old git, a professional man who wants change in this country. The police in this country have been brain washed into believing they are not civilians and above us, they live among us and snitch and twitch behind curtains.

  6. James is absolutely right. Shouting in front of a building will not bring you anything. Even if it brings publicity to your concerns, those concerns are well known and widely shared amongst the population. It’s not like you are saying anything new. But what bothers me is that nowhere in this website did I find how you think things can be improved. It’s very easy to ask for change, but to come up with a new (better) way to do things is a completely different affair, isn’t it.
And Yussi, if you want to get rid of capitalism, do you want to bring about communism? If you don’t want communism, but you don’t want capitalism either, good luck coming up with a new political theory. But before someone has come up with a working solution to the problems of this country, don’t bother protesting.
