Santiago Maldonado – Return Him Alive! London Protest
Hosted by Argentina Solidarity Campaign

2pm Sunday 1st October outside the Argentine Embassy, 65 Brook Street, Mayfair, London W1K 4AH (Bond Street tube)

Bring photos of Santiago’s face, posters and relenant signs in English and Spanish. Let’s make it bug and lively!

On 1st August 2017, the Argentine National Gendarmeria (GNA) – a government military force – violently repressed the Mapuche community Pu Lof en Resistencia, in Chubut, Argentina. Santiago Maldonado, a 28-year-old activist who was there to assist the community to reclaim their tribal lands was forcibly disappeared. According to the community, the GNA fired lead and rubber bullets, and burned many families’ possessions.

Santiago has not been seen since the raid. Witness testimonies and photographic evidence suggest that he was beaten by a group of gendarmes and then bundled into the back of a GNA truck. Many fear he was tortured and murdered. Many also fear that this tragedy marks the return of the 30,000 state disappearances that scarred the nation during the 1976-83 military dictatorship. The Argentinian Government and much of its media have responded by seeking to discredit Santiago’s family and attack those who are demanding his reappearance with an intense campaign of misinformation.

Global outrage has followed. Thousands are protesting across the world and the United Nations, Amnesty International and the Inter-American Human Rights Commission have expressed concern, calling upon the state to do more to find him.

If Santiago is not returned before then, to mark two months since his forced disappearance on October 1st 2017 there will be a global day of protest to demand his safe return in cities in Argentina and the world. In London Argentina Solidarity Campaign is organising a protest too. Our demands will be:

1) That the national government urgently adopts all the necessary measures to find Santiago Maldonado;
2) It carries out a full and impartial investigation into the events perpetrated on 1 August in the community of Pu Lof en Resistencia, to make the results public, and to bring those responsible for human rights violations to justice;
3) Implement any measures necessary in order to guarantee the physical integrity of the Mapuche community Pu Lof en Resistencia, with their full participation;
4) Reach a definitive solution to the territorial claim of the Lof Cushamen community of the Mapuche people.

There will also be a protest taking place outside Benetton, Oxford Circus at 12 midday the same day:

Please join us. Share this event page for the protest outside the Embassy. Be part of the global movement that is demanding to know: #dondeestasantiagomaldonado?
