Today – New Bank of Ideas space opens 9.30am; UK Occupy gathering & Vivienne Westwood

 
  • Bank of Ideas opens at 9.30am with ceremony
  • First ever gathering of UK occupations, Sermon on the Steps, Tent City University events and General Assembly at 7pm
  • Plus Vivienne Westwood to speak at 4pm by steps of St Paul’s

As part of its campaign for economic justice, Occupy London will today open up its new third space and first building, the Bank of Ideas, transforming the huge abandoned offices of investment bank UBS which it has ‘repossessed’, into a space for political discussion and debate.

At 9.30am Saturday 19th November, Occupy London will welcome guests to the Bank of Ideas’s opening ceremony on Sun Street (borough of Hackney). Speakers include a representative from Occupy Plymouth, who is taking part in the UK’s first ever gathering of UK occupations taking place this weekend at Occupy London.

Events on Saturday 19th November at Bank of Ideas include:

  • 10am – Representatives of Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) on “Battles for Dignity in London”
  • 12pm – Session led by trader Alessio Rastani, who sent shockwaves through the media following a provocative interview on the Eurozone crisis.
  • 1pm – Palestine and the BDS Movement
  • 2pm – Nick Pickles, director of Big Brother Watch on “The Surveillance State”
  • 3pm – “Bankers are Criminals – so what else is new?” Prof. John Weeks and Professor Emeritus, SOAS
  • 4pm – “Life in Cuba” Elizabeth Dore and Professor in Latin American Studies, Southampton University

As part of the new Bank of Idea’s, offices and meeting rooms will be available for those that have lost their nurseries, community centres and youth clubs due to Government spending cuts.

First ever gathering of UK occupations at Occupy London
Occupiers from Occupy London’s camps – at St Paul’s Courtyard and at Finsbury Square – welcomes representatives from occupations across the UK this weekend (Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th November), who are coming together for the first time ever.

Delegates will begin defining the national campaign, addressing common challenges and work to find ways of moving forward. Occupations from as far afield as Newcastle and the Isle of Wight have confirmed that they will be attending. Also attending are Bath, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Norwich and Plymouth.

  • 10.30am – Bring back improvisation at Tent City University (TCU) by Maciej Burdynowski
  • 11am – Social dreaming at TCU
  • 12am – Occupying the Olympics: Citizen Media and London 2012 (Reclaiming the narrative) with Jennifer Jones at TCU
  • 2pm – Indigenous peoples rights and the globalised world’s wrongs – talk and discussion at TCU
  • 3pm – Jim Drysdale – Anti-capitalist Poetry at TCU
  • 3.45pm – Vivienne Westwood – Speaking by step of St Paul’s Cathedral about how everything is connected – the financial crisis is a mirror of the ecological crisis. She will also talk about the importance of culture – of becoming an art lover – to get off the consumer treadmill
  • 4pm – Sermon on the Steps at St Paul’s – Short gathering to talk about the issues that Occupy London is raising through its campaign for a more just and fair society. Includes invited guests across multiple faiths, beliefs and none
  • 4pm – Bridget Anderson / Nando Singona on Migration Control at TCU
  • 4pm – Session on tax havens/ secrecy jurisdictions at TCU, with Nicholas Shaxson (author: Treasure Islands), Montford Tadier (Jersey parliamentarian) and Anthea Lawson (senior investigator, Global Witness).
