The Fantastic Four, by Tim Williams

FantasticFour

Today was an extraordinary day at Barton Moss. It took over 6 hours for the trucks to get in. We had a lock-together by the Fantastic Four, and a visit from the head of the Green Party who walked in line with us. Although there were 6 arrests, to me there was the sense that the police were trying to facilitate our peaceful protest; and by and large they showed more patience, tolerance, and compassion than usual. The Protectors were on fine form, singing the anthems of Love and victory that make up the repertoire of Dazen, our much loved mystic minstrel.

At one point, after standing very still for a while my perception shifted out of the dual, and i realised that we are all the same, all wearing uniforms of one kind or another, all trying to protect what is important to us, all breathing the same air, all alive in the same moment, and all prone to making mistakes.

During the march, I heard on the radio the Prime Minister speaking about fracking saying “If it’s not safe we won’t do it”. History and factual evidence from around the world clearly show that fracking at best is extremely dangerous. Before his interview on the radio, on the news it said that a new survey estimated that fracking in the U.K would provide 70,000 jobs. Turns out that the survey was funded by Cuadrilla, one of the major players in the fracking nightmare.

This protest is taking place during a continued spell of unprecedented extreme weather conditions and still people are doubting the truth of climate change and the part that the fossil fuel industry has to play in it. In my perception, humanity was shining today on Barton Moss road- it shone brightly through the Fantastic Four who locked together courageously, It shone through the singing of the Protectors, and even seemed to shine through the considerate behaviour of some of the police. This is a critical moment for humanity, and it’s time to choose and act.

Start of the action.
