Occupy London responds to City of London Corporation notice; Alleged assault

Occupy London acknowledges receipt of the ‘notice to remove’ issued by the City of London Corporation. Our legal team is studying the document carefully. [1]

Last week, Occupy London presented our formal response to the City of London Corporation. We have never received a response to this offer. Instead, the Corporation has opted to break off the process of dialogue completely and resort to the courts.

We asked the Corporation to do three things that every other local authority in the United Kingdom does as a matter of course. We asked the Corporation to make itself accountable to the public under the Freedom of Information Act. We asked the Corporation to publish details of the City Cash account. Finally, we asked the Corporation to be more open about the lobbying activities it has undertaken since the financial crisis of 2008.

For any other local authority in the country, these would be legal requirements. There is a troubling anomaly in the heart of our capital city, a place where normal rules do not apply. This anomaly is not just a picturesque anachronism that parades past St Paul’s in gilded carriages once a year. [2]

It is a concentration of power and influence that not only stops our economy working properly, it even warps the policies we follow at a national level. It brings us into disrepute with our neighbours.

Social responsibility is at the heart of the Occupy movement around the world, which seeks to create a more just society for the benefit of ordinary people, rather than the privileged few.

Some public bodies are also mindful of their social responsibilities. We note that St Paul’s Cathedral has issued a statement today saying that it has always desired a “peaceful resolution” to this situation:

“We are committed to maintaining St Paul’s as a sacred space in the heart of London. We recognise the local authority’s statutory right to proceed with the action it has. We have always desired a peaceful resolution and the canons will continue to hold regular meetings with representatives of the protesters.” [3]

Alleged assault

During the process of notices being issued to individual tents, a representative from the local authority – the City of London Corporation – is alleged to have assaulted two members of the public, one of whom is now receiving hospital treatment. When questioned, this individual refused to identify themselves in front of witnesses. We call on the Corporation to provide this information so that we may consider legal proceedings.

Video footage of this incident will be made available shortly.

[4] On Sunday 16th October at an assembly of over 500 people on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral, Occupy London collectively agreed the initial statement below. Please note, like all forms of direct democracy, the statement will always be a work in progress.

1 The current system is unsustainable. It is undemocratic and unjust. We need alternatives; this is where we work towards them.

2 We are of all ethnicities, backgrounds, genders, generations, sexualities dis/abilities and faiths. We stand together with occupations all over the world.

3 We refuse to pay for the banks’ crisis.

4 We do not accept the cuts as either necessary or inevitable. We demand an end to global tax injustice and our democracy representing corporations instead of the people.

5 We want regulators to be genuinely independent of the industries they regulate.

6 We support the strike on the 30th November and the student action on the 9thNovember, and actions to defend our health services, welfare, education and employment, and to stop wars and arms dealing.

7 We want structural change towards authentic global equality. The world’s resources must go towards caring for people and the planet, not the military, corporate profits or the rich.

8 We stand in solidarity with the global oppressed and we call for an end to the actions of our government and others in causing this oppression.

9 This is what democracy looks like. Come and join us!

[5] Bringing together a diverse range of people, Occupy London’s Stock Exchange and Finsbury Square (OccupyLFS) are part of more than 20 actions and occupations happening in towns and cities across the UK and over 950 actions worldwide coming together under the banner of “United For Global Change” calling for true democracy. OccupyLSX is supported by groups including UK Uncut, the London-based Assembly of the Spanish 15M movement and others. It has already received phenomenal interest, from the public and media in the UK and around the world, with the OccupyLSX facebook group now having almost 25,000 members.

  1. all well thought out and valid arguments

    • True, but too wide a scope to be taken seriously by the powers that be I fear.

  2. We asked the Corporation to publish details of the City Cash account

Why don’t Occupy publish details of their donations, expenses, and assets? That’ll be because those in charge of the money are financially enriching themselves through the donations. If it’s libel then sue me.

And your allegations of assault are bollocks by the way. Stop playing the victim.

    • I asked a similar sort of question to this and got no reply! It’s a shame they want others to be transparent yet they themselves feel they don’t have to be.

      • Daniel, it becomes increasingly obvious that the movement has somethign to hide, and Ii think we can all guess what that is!!

        • I have also asked and have also got no no reply…

          • Morning Dill Doe & Co.
You do get replies you little liar you !! 😉
You just do not like the replies, SO
YOU choose to dis-regard them, and pay homage to
your fellow sex tools. Dont you ?

          • In response to Colonel Canvas – we DO get replies, well done! You have completely ignored the question though – we want to see the finances of the Occupy Camp!

          • The information is there if you wish to look for it. The fact that you choose to go “La La La” is indicative that the molehill is just that.

          • @brobof – again, not answering the question. Perhaps you could point us to where this information is?

          • Sorry Dill Doe and others, I personally cannot help with your requests because the CURRENT SYSTEM we have does not allow this sort of information to be easily accessed. Lets h.o.p.e. it changes soon so we will all be happy, well most of the 99% anyway, there will always be 1 or 2 die hards that cant let go of the toys !

    • I’m sure they’ll get round to this as soon as they have held the Private Central Bankers who print money out of thin air and charge we the people interest on it to account.
Hope it’s not too drafty there in the troll department of the Bank of Rothschild, (sorry I mean Bank of England) Jim, pop down to St. Pauls and they’ll even supply a blanket!

      • The corporation is a public authority and the Freedom of Information Act applies to it and it has to provide such information under law when requested. Occupy London is not a public authority and the Freedon of Information Act would not apply to it and they are not under law required to provide that.

        • Ehh, that’s not the point. What we are saying is that if Occupy want transparency then they should lead by example and show their own finances.

          • BUT occupy is full of INDIVIDUALS, are you prepared to divulge yours ?

  3. I’m guessing that if you’re keen to pursue this alleged assault, you’ll give up the camp members that urinate, smoke weed, litter, graffiti, leave dog faeces, beg, busk, and so on. Or is it another case of one rule for the camp? And don’t just fob me off that these things don’t happen because I see it every day I walk through the camp.

    • I’ll second that! Certainly seems that it’s one rule for the Camp. Not a very good example for the type of world that they are saying they want either

  4. OBEY THE BEAST IN THE UNIFORM AND BEAST COURTS…..put that poster up next to ther eviction order………..with picture of police man cartoon…………..

  5. No-one is financially enriching themselves here. Are you at the Occupy camp? If so, just go to a finance working group meeting to find out the state of the finances.

Some people behave in disrespectful and unhelpful ways. Here in the vicinity of St Paul’s, and in every other city and town centre in the country. That’s a shame and I wish they wouldn’t. But it has nothing to do with whether someone was assaulted during the serving of papers.

    • No-one is financially enriching themselves here.

Prove it. You demand transparency from others, get your own house in order first.

Are you at the Occupy camp?

Nope – too far away, self employed and a family to support. I don’t work, I don’t get paid.

If so, just go to a finance working group meeting to find out the state of the finances.

And for those people who can’t?

      • I’m also eagerly awaiting the answers to your questions Jim.

        • You say your requests for financial transparency are being ignored. It’s clear by your posts that you have never visited the camp. If you want to know what goes on there, go to the general assembly and ask your questions.

Might I also point out that all you are really doing here is anonymously posting abuse and negative comments on a message board.

          • Again, not everyone can visit the camp. You keep bypassing these questions. Perhaps you need to go back to Tent University?

I’ll say again what many of us have already asked: why won’t you publish the financials of the Occupy Camp?

  6. don’t you get it,they serve you,not the other way around, they are submitting submissions against you, fact……if its found that your protests are fake you”l be removed any way,,as its attracting people who believe in you…..please no more criminal decption crimes aginst the people, are you NWO=OWN THE EARTH MASONIC JEWS?golden snake but its tail is dark,,offering frre gifts,a fake new age,,if you are,EXPECT THE POLICE TO KICK YOUR ASSES OF st pauls a.s.a.p!

  12. FANX
    good work HERE
    extensive PIECE
    grateful as ALL ways.
    .
    .O.

  13. So where is this alleged assault video then……….?

    • I’m also wondering that….

  14. …just seen the BBC report covering the ‘Eviction Notice’ that occurred yesterday. Interesting, unbiased turn of phrase they chose to use. Apparently after being attached to the tents the notices were ‘torn down’…………I was right there and nothing was ‘torn’ down at all.

If you want to read another piece of unbiased, accurate (?) journalism grab a copy of The Spectator and read Rod Liddle’s article. If you do, please note his opening premise (the decision to go down to St. Paul’s to see what’s actually happening) and then note who he decides to quote first.

  15. While not entirely in agreement with the Occupiers’ goals, I have some experience in taking Freedom of Information cases against the City of London Corporation through the appeals process (Information Commissioner’s Office and Information Rights Tribunal), and would be willing to assist with this.

Could you be specific about exactly what information was requested, on what date, and exactly what reply was received?

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/ is an excellent way to make and followup FOI requests in a public forum, by the way.
