Global Power Shift, Powershift UK 2014 Conference

Global Power Shift 2014.

Global Power Shift 2014.

I was asked to livestream the Powershift 2014 conference learning more about other groups working on the threat of Climate Change. I am encouraged that various groups are continuing to link up, to fight against the corporate propaganda. One good lesson reiterated today. Instead of concentrating on convincing sceptics of the fight against Ecocide, attention should be focused on people who agree, but are brainwashed into believing that There Is No Alternative. We need to convince them that There Is A Real Alternative.~ Obi_Live

Power Shift UK is part of Global Power Shift , which launched in June 2013 with a week-long convergence of 600 people from 130 countries around the world in Istanbul. The Power Shift UK organising team aims to bring people together to help create a UK climate movement that is more diverse and involves a broad range of groups and people from a range of backgrounds. We’re volunteers who are individually involved in climate and environmental issues through local transition groups, permaculture projects, student groups, health groups, local and national environmental organisations.

Ecological Transition: The Limits of the EU.

The EU is often seen as an progressive institution pulling the UK towards more sustainability. In this talk, however, David will focus on some of the limiting factors of the EU for strong political action in favour of sustainability. The possible consequences of a UK withdrawal from the EU will be discussed.

David Acunzo is a graduate in Environmental Management from ISIGE Mines ParisTech (France) and Tsinghua University (China) and has a PhD from The University of Edinburgh.

Community energy: Afsheen Rashid - REPOWERING LONDON

In her role as Co-founder Director of Repowering London and Chair of Brixton Energy, Afsheen works with community groups across London supporting them to develop renewable (solar) energy projects that are owned and managed by the local community. Afsheen’s experience over the last 10 years has ranged from simple awareness raising campaigns to encouraging take up of sustainable lifestyles and behaviour change to co-producing local energy projects. The workshop will focus on sharing her knowledge and experience of working with London’s diverse communities with particular reference to the Brixton Energy Solar Co-operatives.

Afsheen is a community energy specialist, having several years experience developing and co-producing community-led projects to address energy related issues. Afsheen pioneered and developed Lambeth Council’s Community Energy Programme; Co-founded Repowering London that specialises in creating local energy projects; Chairs Brixton Energy Solar 1, Solar 2 and Solar 3, the UK’s first inner city renewable energy co-operatives; Managed the Mayor’s Low Carbon Zone programme in Brixton driving carbon reduction by 12% over a two year period. Afsheen was instrumental in setting up the Muslim Women’s Collective in Tower Hamlets that seeks to empower women to play an active role in improving the environment.

Community Development, Social Justice and Climate Session: Chris Church - LOW CARBON COMMUNITIES

The need to engage with more people and communities on climate issues is very clear. This session will look at lessons from community development approaches to building long-term engagement, and at how to work with the additional issues that arise when focusing on global/climate issues. It will offer participants ideas based on past success on how to build and strengthen engagement in any community.

Chris work on links between community development and climate change. When not chairing the Low Carbon Communities Network (which links some 600 groups across the UK) he works with social/community development projects in a range of deprived communities in London, Kent and the West Midlands. The excitement comes from people arriving at their own approaches and solutions. Chris is also working to set up Community Energy England, a body that will be a voice for communities and social enterprises working to save and generate energy.

How do we build a critical mass for change: George Barda - OCCUPY LONDON / RECLAIM THE POWER

George Barda has been a social & environmental justice campaigner and activist for over a decade, and has worked at a number of development and environment NGOs including Concern worldwide, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace. He has recently completed a master’s degree in Environment, Politics and Globalisation at King’s College. George shot to fame with the Occupy London protests when he spent weeks camping in St Paul’s Churchyard. When the City of London Corporation took legal action to evict the protest, he put himself forward as a litigant in person so that he could mount a completely different defence from the one organised by the camp as a whole.
