OCCUPY LONDON GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Date(s) - 05/04/2014
2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
St Paul's cathedral, on the steps
After a very positive General Assembly (GA) on the steps of St Paul’s on March 1st, one of the few complaints was that the next GA wasn’t immediately announced.
So, better late than never, here’s the announcement: Saturday 5th April, 2.30-4.30pm, on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral:
ALL ARE VERY WELCOME!
Occupy isn’t us who look after this website; Occupy isn’t the people who camped at St Paul’s; Occupy is everyone who knows that the current system is undemocratic, unjust and unsustainable… and would like to work together peacefully and co-operatively to explore alternatives.
We counted 100 people on the steps of St Paul’s on Saturday March 1st. Please, if you were there, come again and bring a friend or two. It would be great if these assemblies could grow again until we fill the steps, fill the cathedral courtyard, spill out into the streets and begin to assemble in neighbourhoods everywhere…
With April 5th being the ‘anniversary’ of the Bedroom Tax, there has been a call for people to take action against this unjust austerity measure. Reflecting that, as an introduction to the GA there’ll be a short performance by Pete The Temp – Occupy poet and squatters’/housing rights activist.
Proposed agenda items (so far) include:
–Feedback from OL working groups and affinity groups, including a report from the newly formed Democracy Action Working Group (DAWG).
–Occupy actions/events on MayDay (Simon Moore, Janie Mac, Andria and Dan)
–Giving formal support to peaceful campaigns and actions against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) (George, Obi, Chris FD)
–Acknowledgement of the ‘anniversary’ of the Bedroom Tax and housing issues (see above)
–Proposal (Peter Coville): Occupy London to sign Tipping Point Declaration
–Clarification of aspects of OL governance (Chris FD, Peter Dombi); eg…
-Proposal: the minimum number of people present for a valid decision-making OL General Assembly (starting today) = 20 -Proposal: the minimum amount of notice required for a valid decision-making OL General Assembly is one full week (ie announce on a Friday, for a GA the following Friday).
–Formation of an Occupy London working group on Peace (Lilias)
–Formation of an Occupy London working group on Civil Disobedience (Simon)
–Working towards a day of nationwide assemblies (Tina Louise)
–Working towards a 2014 version of The Putney Debates (as organised by OL in 2012) (David Dewhurst)
–?Discussion on how OL uses Twitter, possible generation of Twitter guidelines? (Peter Dombi)
Additional proposals will be gathered and added to the agenda, with a final GA planning meeting to refine and clarify the agenda and to take place at 1pm in Apostrophe Cafe just across the road from St Paul’s Cathedral. All are welcome to attend this planning meeting; proposers should attend if at all possible. If you’d like to volunteer to be on the GA facilitation crew, please come along to this planning meeting.
