Atos Demonstrations UK Wide at 144 locations
19th February 2014

“The poor treatment of some of our most vulnerable citizens by Atos is well documented. Last year whistleblower Greg Wood gave us a glimpse of the tests many disabled people have undergone at the hands of the company – a process he revealed as “unfair” and “skewed against the claimant”. People have been found fit to work on the company’s medical assessments simply because they got the bus to the interview. One in four initial decisions have later been overturned – a horrific rate of failure – and the government has not held ATOS to account.

We have built an impressive national demonstration, or more correctly network of demonstrations to take place on the 19th February to protest against the unfair treatment of people by ATOS. We’ve even had support from mainstream Labour MP’s. The next step now is getting them to sign up to genuine social change.

I think our real task as activists is to get policy makers to listen to us, I think we can only do this though sustained and coordinated lobbying and genuine participation in the political system. I think it’s heart breaking when influential people like Russell Brand discourage people from voting. The turn out in the 2009 European election in the UK was incredibly low, around 30%. If just half the current non voting population turned out they could pick and choose whatever leaders and policies they wanted.

We have some brilliant solutions to the economic and environmental challenges we face like a citizens income or reverse income tax, along with taking control of the money supply away from the banks and re introducing free university education to all.

Once our political class realises they can only continue to be electable if they embrace these radical socially just policies and break from their rich corrupt pay masters from the private sector and upper classes we will see genuine social change.

I truly hope our demonstration on the 19th is a sign of things to come, people organising autonomously at a grass roots level to put on a campaign that gets national press coverage and also helps those involved realise they are already empowered to lobby and influence their politicians. ”
