Are you interested in exploring the ideas that underpin the newly launched International Organisation for a Participatory Society (IOPS)?

IOPS was launched as an interim organization earlier this year with the aim of propelling activism for winning a new world. IOPS is structured as a bottom-up, international organization, based on self-managing interconnected national branches and local chapters.  More than 2,600 people from across the world have already joined IOPS!

Join us for a welcome event in London on Sunday 28th October 2012!

11am – 5.30pm @ Firebox café

5.30pm – 7pm: Social event

“I am eagerly anticipating the IOPS UK and Ireland sessions taking place in London on 28th October to discuss IOPS, social movement organization and vision for a participatory society.

I hope to be of service, and to learn from those present, from all around the UK and Ireland. This is, indeed, exactly the kind of gathering I hoped for on this trip. I hope other locales rise up to your important example.”

Michael Albert

(ZNet co-founder and IOPS member)

You can read a blog (written by IOPS members) about their hopes and aspirations for the event here.

The Day:

1) 11am – 11.30am: Introductions

2) 11.30am – 12noon: What is IOPS? * Michael Albert

IOPS brings people together who wish to organize around a shared vision for the future based on self-management, equity, diversity and solidarity. Supporters include, Noam Chomsky, John Pilger, Vandana Shiva and many others. Michael Albert, a founding member, discusses the new organization, its structure, and how you can get involved to bring about the change we all desire. There will be time for questions.

3) 12noon – 1pm: Group discussions and Feedback: IOPS Mission and Vision

The IOPS vision is anti-capitalist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-authoritarian. Themission seeks to centrally address economics/class, politics, culture/race, kinship/gender, ecology, and international relations without privileging any one focus above the rest.

Participants will be invited to choose an aspect of the IOPS mission and vision they would like to explore in further depth:

  • Economics/Class & Ecology: Existing Problems and Possible Alternatives

*Michael Albert to facilitate

  • Gender, Sexuality and Identity

 *Jamie Heckert to facilitate

  • International Relations and Media

 *Florian Zollmann to facilitate

[1pm – 2pm: Lunch]

4) 2pm – 3pm: Group discussions and Feedback: IOPS Mission and Vision

After lunch, participants will be invited to choose an aspect of the IOPS mission andvision they would like to explore in further depth:

  • Culture, Race, and Community

 *Preeti Kaur to facilitate

  • Politics and self-managing polity: Existing Problems and Possible Alternatives

 *Michael Albert to facilitate

  • Suggest a topic or theme

5) 3pm – 4pm: Moving from here to there (Strategy by *Michael Albert)

How do you gather together like-minded people separated by thousands of miles to work for a better world? And how does that group organize itself to achieve this goal? Michael Albert provides some ideas and explores how IOPS’ structure may facilitate this. There will be time for questions.

6) 4pm – 5.30pm: Building local chapters: Group discussions and Feedback

Taking inspiration from the ideas put forward in the above session, we shall consider what we think is needed to build vibrant local chapters.

We hope to reach some commitments (including whether or not IOPS UK and Ireland should meet again in October 2013, if not earlier!). And, raise questions that will need further consideration and discussion in the months and years to come!

Please join us for a social event from 5.30pm – 7pm at the Firebox café!
