With just days to go before Cuadrilla is supposed to pack up and leave you’d think we might have run out of arrestees by now. Think again. The drillers are still trying to do their thing. So we continue to do our thing.
The cops, meanwhile, still insist on snatching us and dragging us off to the copshop for tea, vegan chilli and a one-sided chat.
This is generally followed by an invitation to further compound the chaos with a trumped up charge leading to a brief appearance in the dock. This ensures one’s personal paperwork is added to the growing mountain of caseloads of Kafa-esque proportions, so weighty, it could open up a sink hole in the legal system. Something to look forward to, we’re sure.
So every Wednesday we return once more to vary our bail and register our pleas. Then the police register their pleas: totally guilty of totally not coping with the paperwork they keep making for themselves. I swear some cops arrest us just to have the excuse to get back to the relative warmth of Crawley cop shop.
Well who can blame them, in a way. I mean while we’re snug and warm in our tents or in our lovely beds at home, they are standing out in the cold dark rain with not even a cup of tea for comfort.
You’d wonder if the Police Federation didn’t have something to say about the health-threatening work conditions of our overworked under-paid public servants. It appears their morale is at a low ebb. They say they feel they are wasting time that could be better spent chasing up criminals and lost grannies.
I’m afraid all we can offer them in terms of solidarity is more excuses to get back to the warm cop shop. And so we continue. Until Cuadrilla has packed up and left Balcombe.
This Wednesday is set to be especially momentous as we shall be handing out the prize to our 100th arrestee! So let’s have some extra special cake and snacks with our tea, to celebrate this fantastic achievement.
