Balcombe Community Protection Camp: Clear off Cuadrilla.

Balcombe Community Protection Camp
Balcombe Community Protection Camp, London Road, Balcombe, West Sussex, RH17 6JH
On September 28th, after 66 days, dozens of actions, over 110 arrests, and 1 failed eviction notice, Cuadrilla’s license for exploratory drilling in Balcombe expires.
For over two months, the Balcombe Protection Camp has been a hub of resistance to Cuadrilla’s dirty and dangerous exploratory work. Local residents and concerned citizens from all over the country have shown their opposition to the toxic chemicals being poured into the ground today, and the fracking that will follow. On the last day that Cuadrilla can legally drill, let’s have a big presence at the camp as we tell Cuadrilla to CLEAR OFF!
TIME TO CELEBRATE
Balcombe is still under threat, as Cuadrilla will almost certainly try and continue their destructive activities in the village next year – but there is still a LOT to celebrate:
- Awareness of fracking has massively increased and it is now a hot topic of national debate.
- When Cuadrilla got their exploratory license three years ago it was granted without discussion – now local authorities know that planning applications will be scrutinised and resisted by local people.
- The camp was able to see off the council’s attempts to evict in court, so there isn’t a precedent that could threaten future protection camps.
- Cuadrilla revoked their application to extend their license after Sept 28th – without the resistance shown over the summer they would probably have just carried on.
So whether you’ve been to the camp over the summer or never seen it before, come down on September 28th to celebrate everything that’s been achieved. The camp is a 5 minute walk from Balcombe station, which is only 25 minutes from Brighton and 39 minutes from London Bridge. For directions to the camp go to www.greatgasgala.org.uk/map
