Emergency Vigil: No More Deaths – End Detention

EMERGENCY VIGIL AT THE HOME OFFICE
THURSDAY 21st SEPTEMBER
2 Marsham St, Westminster, London SW1P 4DF

——-
For the second time this month, there has been a death in a UK immigration detention centre.

Yesterday it was confirmed by the Home Office that a man with Chinese nationality died at Dungavel IRC in South Lanarkshire, Scotland: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-41326686

Earlier this month a Polish man took his own life at Harmondsworth near Heathrow: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/sep/09/polish-immigrant-dies-after-suicide-attempt-in-uk-detention-centre He had been granted bail by the courts, but the Home Office had refused to release him.

Detention has always been violent and these two awful pieces of news come at the end of a long list of deaths caused by immigration imprisonment. There is information about some of the other people who have died in immigration detention since 1989 on the IRR website here: http://www.irr.org.uk/news/deaths-in-immigration-detention-1989-2017/

Our thoughts are with friends and family, and with everyone incarcerated in immigration detention. We are calling on supporters to gather at the Home Office for a demonstration and vigil, to mark the deaths of these men and to say not one more.

NO MORE DEATHS IN CUSTODY – END DETENTION NOW
