Minutes of Economics Working Group – Monday December 12th 2011 6pm

1. Reports from Sub Groups
Banks – Known members – Tony, Hannah; Meetings – E-mail Hannah for details; Progress – scoping their remit which includes derivatives, debt exchange, credit unions, payday loans.
Sustainability – Known members – Liam, Chris, Mattia; Meetings – planning to meet with environment group; Progress – getting things started.
Tax Havens – Known members – Peter, Leon, Dave; Meetings – nothing formal so far but informal discussions; Progress – on-line investigation of issues involved.
Economic Democracy – Known members – Deda, Chris, Noelia, Noel, Michelle; Meetings – one so far; Progress – defining their purpose.
Land and Housing – Known members – Chris, Chris, Tim, Noelia, Mark, Robin, Hannah; Meetings – 3 so far, meet every Friday at 3pm in Ye Olde London; Progress – talking through the issues involved.
Education – Known members – Dave, Chris, Fabian, Chris, Daniel; Meetings – several so far; Progress – development of the TCU economic degree course and a questionnaire about what people want to learn.
Austerity – Unknown
Inequality – Unknown
Regulation – Unknown
IT WAS AGREED THAT FOR THOSE 3 GROUPS ABOUT WHICH THERE WAS NO KNOWN PROGRESS, MEMBERS SHOULD EITHER COME AND REPORT AT NEXT FRIDAY’S MEETING, OR ELSE E-MAIL DETAILS OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR AT THEIR SUB-GROUP. IF NO REPORTS ARE FORTHCOMING THEIR WORK WILL BE RE-ALLOCATED.
2. GA Meeting on Economics
At the GA on 1st December, nine points of concern in the area of Economics were agreed as being worthy of further investigation. These points will be incorporated into the working group feedback at next Friday’s meeting and allocated as appropriate.
It was also noted that the GA is intending to discuss Banking this Wednesday and Economics this Saturday. All members of the Economics WG are encouraged to attend these two GA’s.
Ravin suggested we should use Twitter to get our message out to the public. Some members thought Twitter was compromised by the authorities. Those members who don’t think Twitter is a security risk are encouraged to contact Ravin in order to co-ordinate taking this forward.
4. Tax Justice Network Newsletter
The Tax Justice Network have asked us to contribute articles to and produce their March newsletter. Thalia, who has editing experience agreed to produce this, assisted by Dave. All members are encouraged to put forward suggestions for articles, and if approved, get writing! It was agreed that articles would fall into three categories: 1) Any article in keeping with previous statements issue by the GA could be written as an Occupy statement. 2) Any article not in keeping with GA statements but agreed by our working group could be issued as a statement of the Occupy Economics Working Group. 3) Any article not agreed by our working group but nonetheless putting forward worthy ideas could be issued as the opinion of that individual. Articles deemed offensive or likely to bring Occupy into disrepute would not be published.
5. Treasury Select Committee
Following last week’s meeting with the FSA we have taken steps to meet the Treasury Select Committee. This was agreed to be a very tricky proposition, which needs to be approached with great care and forethought, but nonetheless worth pursuing. Some form of lobbying was also suggested going forward.
Chris asked for any assistance with webdesign.
Liam said there was another Economics Working Group tour of Canary Wharf taking place tomorrow (Tuesday 13th December). All members encouraged to attend – meet at Canary Wharf tube at 6pm.
