Power, Gender and Rojava
Power, Gender and Rojava by Brick_Lane_Debates on Mixcloud
Above is a recording of a talk given by women from the Rojava movement, followed by focussed discussion on the Rojava revolution in Northern Syria, the central role of women within this liberation movement and the relationship, if any, this might have to women in the UK, or feminist movements at large.
Due to decades of misinformation, racism and propaganda based on colonial interests there is often understandable caution regarding info on the Middle East. At the same time there is a risk that if people don’t acknowledge Rojava, the women who’ve fought, worked and endeavoured so hard to build this revolution, standing against violence and oppression, will stand alone.
ISIS is trying to annihilate it, as is the Turkish state, the West ignores it. Systemic sexual violence against women is used as a weapon of war. They are blockaded and bombarded on all sides, but continue to organise and even take in thousands of refugees seeking safety from the Syria war.
Speakers include:
Evrim Yilmaz, member of Foreign Affairs committee of Roj Women Assembly.
Zeynep Kurban, also a member of RojWomen and The Kurdish Red Cross, the only humanitarian aid service active in Kobane and Rojava.
This event was organsied by Sisters Uncut and Black Dissidents
