Lewisham Says No to NHS Cuts
An estimated 25,000 people marched in Lewisham today, in rejection against the planned closure of their hospital’s A&E.
This action sent a clear signal, the people want to keep the NHS despite the government’s planned cuts and selling off chunks to private healthcare providers such as Circle and Spire Healthcare. Already, since coming to power the Coalition government has cut 6,000 nursing post nationwide, and 1 in 10 A&E departments face closure due to the government’s austerity drive. The Financial Times report that NHS budgets will be reduced by 8% over the next three years. A hospital has already become privatised in Cambridgeshire : Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Many more
The locals talked with pride about the high standard of care provided by Lewisham hospital, many carrying placards about how the hospital had saved their lives – or the lives of their loved ones.
